Providing better care for diabetic and thalassemic children and developing research until a cure is found remain at the core of the Center’s mission.
Partners and supporters
The CCC, in its short period of existence and owing to the tireless dedication and sincerity of its committed Board members, Doctors, medico-social & administrative teams and numerous supporters, has achieved a great deal.
Since 1994, the Center has been supported at the curative and/or preventive level by the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Social Affairs, the European Comission, SLCD, UNICEF, WHO, Hope Worldwide, and many other organizations.
The Center’s partners and supporters, who believed in its mission, have multiplied with time. In 2000, the Center benefited from the assistance of the Italian Government to equip its Genetic Research Laboratory, through MOPH and AVSI. In 2003, the Japanese Ambassy supported the Laboratory through the Grass Root Program.
Donors and friends
Since 1994, donors and friends of the Center, whose number has exceeded eight hundred, played a significant role in making possible the treatment of patients and the advances in research.
Yet the match is simple: with an increasingly growing number of patients tags along a mounting cost. Non-profit organizations in and outside Lebanon are competing against tighter public and private funds, and the Chronic Care Center is no exception.
The path is still arduous and we have a long way ahead to be able to:
| • |
Maximize the quality of health care provided at the Center
| In Diabetes service: |
| - |
Implement new treatment modalities: use of new insulines, new techniques for glucose monitoring and pumps. |
| - |
Be part of Islet Cell transplation trials. |
| In Thalassemia service: |
| - |
Design trials at increasing efficacy and safety of chelation therapy. |
| - |
Offer bone marrow transplant to selected patients through an on-going collaborative program with an Italian Institute. |
|
| • |
Take action to improve prevention and treatment through appropriate mixes of new genetic and preventive strategies. |
| • |
Multiply the educational activities to prevent secondary complications of diabetes and improve the quality of life. |
| • |
Keep our doors open to all new cases. |
| • |
Intensify our stuggle to reduce the risk of having new thalassemics through awareness campaigns, free screening programs, activation of premarital certificate, offering genetic counseling and family planning sessions. |
| • |
Seek excellence in research, especially in the Genetics field. |
| |
|
Despite tremendous efforts deployed in self-financing, the Center still depends on the generosity of the Chronic Care Center family and friends to sustain the high level of patient care and research that made the C.C.C. renown by many.
