1- Hot Line for Diabetes Patient: 24 hours medical emergency service.

2- New materials
  Insulin Pumps
Until this date, 20 of our patients who are mostly adolescents, are under pump therapy, Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion (CSII). 50% of our pumpers are self-payers, the others are covered either by CNSS or the Lebanese Army.
CGMS
Continuous Glucose Monitoring System One of the newest machines utilized in the CCC to better control diabetes is the CGMS. It registers glycemia every 5 min for 3 days; data is then transferred to the PC and analyzed by the team. To date, 16 patients of all ages have benefited up from the advantages of this machine.
Lancet device
An evaluation study was done on a new lancet device manufactured by Roche called “AccuCheck multiclix”. 42 of our patients were involved. The study is in process.
Clinical Trials
- A study is planned for the new Levemir Insulin in summer 2006.
- The center will consider being involved in an International Study on Diabetes Management Practices this year.

3- Trainings and Continuing Education
  On January 2006:
Our nurses-diabetes educators- participated in a training session on pump therapy, organized by Medtronic Minimed on the Paradigm Real Time and Guardian Real Time.
On September 2006:
A   training  session  is  planned  in  France,  for  one  of  our nurse   educators  on pump therapy in children.
Completion of Diabetes Awareness Project funded by the Medtronic Foundation:
A multidisciplinary team of a social worker, a nurse educator and a dietician, promoted a diabetes awareness and education campaign in 24 public and private schools, all around Lebanon. Regions visited were Beirut, Zahleh, Machghara, Akkar, Tripoli, Koura, Saida, Tyr, Maghdoucheh, Marjeyoun, Tebnin, Ain Ebl, Baakline, Alley, Metn and Kesrouan. Around 2820 students (8th and 9th grades) benefited from this campaign, including: Diabetes definition, symptoms, complications, treatment, social problems of young diabetics, nutritional management of diabetes; all this aiming to promote a positive social integration.

4- Books & Posters
 
The adventure of Monty «Monty goes to the vet».
Jad, an 8 years old boy, has diabetes. He takes his dog Monty who has been feeling weak lately to the vet hospital for a check up. There, he learns that they both now share the same disease. Jad tells Monty about his condition, the importance of the treatment, the diet, and exercise to live a normal life with diabetes.
The book will be also available in French. A bilingual multimedia CD-rom is included with each book. This book is sponsored by Medtronic Foundation. It will be distributed to schools & sold in book stores. Proceeds will go to the treatment of our patients.
 

5- The Diabetes International Day 2006
  Ongoing preparation of this year's International Diabetes Day, “Diabetes Care for everyone”, scheduled for November 14th.

A medical conference will be held at the Center on this occasion in addition to other activities that will be organized by the Diabetes Department.

6- Patients activities
  Accu-Check 2006 Art Contest:
After its first participation in Accu-Check 2005 Art Contest, “the story of my diabetes”, the first prize winner, at the national and international level, was Richard, 12 years, from the Chronic Care Center. Around 100 of the Chronic Care Center's young patients are participating in this year's theme, “Diabetes and School”.
Summer camp 2006
Summer camp 2006 was organized in July 2006, in Faraya.  30 young patients (13 to 16 years) will be participating in this activity. It will be a good life sharing experience, enjoying activities together, under the supervision of the social worker and the nurse educator.

7- In Brief, Patient's News:
  In 2005, Grace K., a translator, had a wonderful experience working for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Rome. «Staying in the Eternal city for almost a year and working for FAO was a lottery ticket» she says.
Fadel, diabetic since 93, got engaged in May 2006. Hope you, all happiness and love!!

  Mohammad, 16 years, Lycée student, passed a beautiful Easter vacation in Spain with his school friends.
  Lama, 10   years, diabetic  since  2004, brilliant  at  school, is  exempted from her  final   exams. She  is  enjoying,  early, her  summer  vacation, waiting  for a new brother or sister.
  Jessica, 18  years, is  presenting  her  official  baccalaureate  and  will  apply  to  Medical  School in Paris. Good Luck!!!
  Maroun, diabetic since 1995, will be in 7th year of medicine, this coming September. He plans to specialize in Oncology. Good luck for our future doctor.
  Zada, newly married, will be a mother in August 2006.  
  Garabed, diabetic from 5 years, is enjoying life. He works in jewelry and practices sports in week-ends. Being a professional cyclist, his last cycling trip was on May 28th, 2006, from Beirut to Bikfaya.
  Catherine was 4 years when diabetes started in her life. Today, she is 9 years. Autonomous and positive, she self-manages very well her disease.
On May 27th, 2006 she celebrated her first communion.

  Roger, diabetic since 13 years, he works hardly for an excellent career. After his telecommunications engineering diploma from Saint Joseph University, he successfully obtained, in 2006, his MBA from the ESA.
  Fouad K., once of the first patients of Chronic Care Center from 1994, won in February 2006 the 2nd prize of the Lebanese Lottery. 1000 Mabrouk!!!
  Maroun, 8 years, and his family got the emigration visa to Canada He left us in March 2006. Good Luck!!!
